{ Friday Finds } MONSTERS

Friday, August 5, 2011

Our midwife suggested that Baby K might want bring a present for his big sister Saige; a little peace offering introductory gift can't hurt and maybe it'll start things off on the right foot and help our Saigerella feel equally special. As you can imagine I've been agonizing over this very-important-present for sometime now... I want it to be keepsake-like, but at the same time I need for Saige to LIKE it so it can do it's job and 'win her over'.

My early brainstorming sessions went something like this: necklace {no}, I.D. bracelet {no},  jewellery box {no}, doll {no}, sentimental hardcover book {no}, Willow Tree angel {no}...

I was fresh out of ideas when I saw  that one of the MacMillan tweens brought her well-loved Ugly Doll camping with her this past weekend.

It was the solution to my problem: Baby K will give his big sister a custom cuddle monster and vice versa. So my search for 2 perfectly ugly plushies was on {like Donkey Kong} and I turned my 'monster hunt' into this week's Friday Finds - a post where I stalk etsy then share some made-in-Canada amazingness...

I first heard about Belua Designs {Edmonton, Alberta} from one of my all-time favourite Canadian bloggers and the mastermind behind Penny People Designs. I was hoping to snag one of these cute little critters from Creative Chaos - Vernon's annual craft show - but it was simply too chaotic and I never did find Belua's booth. Each monster is given it's own unique name - like Flozy and Flamax & Davoon above - adopt one for only $30.00 CAD {use the coupon code "fremly" at checkout to receive a 15% off discount}.

LemonPie Handmades from Richmond, B.C. {love my fellow British Columbians} make these ahh-dorable buck tooth monster pillows that make sleeping all the more fun. Large ones go for $29.99 CAD and the minis {see above} are only $24.99 CAD + shipping.

Laaf creates and sells the most undeniably sweet, one-of-a-kind, non-scary monsters for only $20.00 CAD!! They look über soft and cuddly and the fact that they're made right here in the 'too-hot-for-this-redhead' Okanagan {Kelowna, B.C.} is cream cheese icing on my carrot cake.

Good things come out of Lindsay, Ontario including Moxy + Toots homemade monsters! The big guys are called Moxies - $25.00 CAD, the round guys are called Dots - $20.00 CAD and for twenty + a five CAD you can get an entire Bag of Munchkins to share or hoard. I tell ya a heart affixed with embroidery will get me every.single.time.

Lola & Gilbert from the etsy shop DoodleDollies {Ottawa, Ontario} are simply ha-larious. The adoption fee for one of these crazy creations ranges from $14.00 to $42.00 CAD making them appealing and affordable to every budget.

** So there you have it... not 1, not 2, but 5 Canadian etsy shops that make cute one-of-a-kind uglies. Can you guess which etsy shop I ended up ordering from for my upcoming monster and monster-to-be sibling gift exchange? I can tell you it wasn't an easy decision to make.
